A New Year in Iowa

with 2 comments

2008 is here and it’s freezing (about 4° F, without wind chill) cold. I pulled out my snowshoes today and hiked for about 40 minutes into a strong headwind. It was a good hike, but I had to duck into a culvert a couple of times to keep my face from freezing. I hope to be outside much more this year (biking, canoeing, hiking, fishing and snowshoeing).

On the tech front I’m going to blog more consistently. Iowa doesn’t currently have many prolific tech bloggers, so I think its time we banded together. Here are a few of the Iowan techies I know: Tim Barcz, Javier Lozano, Arian Kulp, Nick Parker, Tim Gifford and Bryan Sampica.

We are planning the first ever Iowa Code Camp possibly on Saturday March 1st.  There will be more to come on this. If you are interested at all in helping out, please contact me and I’ll get you plugged in. The website is certainly not ready, but I’ll be working on it as I have time.

CRIneta.org held even in attendance and stabilized a bit this year. I’ll likely be president again this year; I’d like to keep the stability and grow the group in 2008. We’ll bring in two Ineta speakers and might get to bring a third national speaker if things work out with one of our sponsors. We’ve also had an excellent experience with our local speakers and want to keep them presenting (Javier, Arian, Nick, Mike Jackson, Eric Johnson and Bryan).

Happy new year.

Bite me

leave a comment »

My son was showing us a mosquito bite on his knee this evening and right after that I asked if he was ready to go to bed.  He was still thinking about the mosquito and said “bite me” quite loud.

So the conversation flowed like this:

Dad: “Are you ready to go night night?”

2 year old: “Bite me”

Conyne Kite

with one comment

Two weeks ago my brother-in-law and I found a new kind of kite called the Conyne and built it from scratch with dowel rods, thread, white glue, electrical tape and tissue paper.

We build it from about 8:00pm – 12:00 am and test flew it up and down main street from about 12:00 am – 1:00 am. But we couldn’t get enough wind while he was here to really put it up.

So yesterday finally there was enough wind to put it up and boy did it fly. It pulled so hard the cord cut into my hands pretty good. Its amazing how much stress tissue paper can withstand.

September

leave a comment »

It’s mid September and we have the first real feel of Fall in the air.  The temperature really dropped this week and we’ll likely have a good frost in the next couple of days.

This is good for two main reasons. Iowa is incredibly pleasant with these cooler temperatures and the frost means the ragweed loses its ability to make me miserable.

End of May

This has been my second May in Iowa and it is my favorite month. The cold lets go, the rain is plentiful and and the world is green again. Until next year May.

The Stories of English

leave a comment »

My current reading includes The Stories of English.  It is written by David Crystal a well known linguist who has written volumes on the English Language.

Most books on English recount the progression of what we typically learn in school, typically called Standard English. This books tells the story of the non-standard and fringe developments that helped make English what it is today.

It starts way back with English’s Germanic roots and progresses up to modern day.  I never realized how much influence the Scandinavians had on English and how few words in English actually have Celtic roots.  I’m currently only 100 pages into the book with another ~400 to go, but it is definitely holding my attention.

One year and counting

leave a comment »

Its been almost a year since we moved to Eastern Iowa from Colorado Springs.Apples from Wilson's Orchard Going from Colorado to the Midwest is definitely a change in many ways, but for us it has been a great experience. We are enjoying the abundance of rain, deciduous trees, rivers, apple orchards and beautiful farm country.

I have no love for ragweed, but I survived the first season of allergies. I’ll definitely be more ready for the ragweed in August in September next year.

There’s much more to write, but I’ll save that for the future.
